Coptic stitch binding features a series of looped stitches that bind a book together. The end result creates a book with an exposed, decorative spine. The spine will lay more flat than that of a traditional covered spine book.

This book is referred to more as hardbound or hardback and is often associated with libraries or bookstores. The text block is sewn together and then secured to the covers of the book.

This binding is most distinguishable by the long stitches that attach the folded pages, or signatures directly to the cover. Most commonly, the cover is leather.
